This was taken at Grosmont Station on the North Yorkshire Railway. I used a Pinhole body cap with my Canon M3, the pinhole is 0.02mm in diameter giving an effective aperture of f180! I often use it hand held by altering the ISO setting to higher values, the noise created by the high ISO setting often gives the images an interesting texture. The images that it creates are not absolutely sharp, but they can have a wonderful ‘timeless’ look especially when printed small on a high quality matt ‘art’ paper.
This image was taken on a very wet day at ISO 6400, I like to think that it gives a feeling of how it was when we relied upon steam as a means of travel. The rain interacts with the steam in a far more dramatic fashion than under normal conditions. It came third in the print section of last year’s second open competition. Photograph by Dave Jordan
