This photograph was taken during a recent visit to South Africa. I spent some time at Zimanga game reserve, in KwaZulu Natal. It was taken at the Umgodi hide, which is an overnight hide set up for large animals. The waters edge is 4 metres away and if you are fortunate animals will come for a drink and give you an opportunity to take their photograph. This cape buffalo visited in the early hours just after midnight and stayed for a while having a drink. That night the sky was very overcast so I took a photograph of the African night sky a couple of evenings later and merged the two images.
Equipment used was a tripod , Canon 5D mk III, with a 16-35mm lens at 25mm. Exposure was 1/15th sec at f/3.5, ISO 2500. Quite a slow shutter speed but these animals are very cautious and will stand absolutely still listening for any danger in the night so that helps.
Don’t forget we have an Exhibition in Norwich from 1st to 5th August at The Open, your photos and help are needed. If you haven’t sorted out any prints yet there is still time. I will be helping out on the 1st with setup so can always take images for you if needed.
